چکیده
Recent research on universal and minimax wavelet shrinkage and thresholding methods has demonstrated near{ideal estimation performance in various asymptotic frameworks. However, image processing practice has shown that universal thresholding methods are outperformed by simple Bayesian estimators assuming independent wavelet coeecients and heavy{tailed priors such as Generalized Gaussian distributions (GGDs). In this paper, we investigate various connections between shrinkage methods and MAP estimation using such priors. In particular, we state a simple condition under which MAP estimates are sparse. We also introduce a new family of complexity priors based upon Rissanen's universal prior on integers. One particular estimator in this class outperforms conventional wavelet{based MDL estimators. We develop analytical expressions for the shrinkage rules implied by GGD and complexity priors. This allows us to show the equivalence between universal hard thresholding, MAP estimation using a very heavy{ tailed GGD, and MDL estimation using one of the new complexity priors. Theoretical analysis supported by numerous practical experiments shows the robustness of some of these estimates against misspeciications of the prior { a basic concern in image processing applications.

Analysis of Multiresolution Image Denoising Schemes Using Generalized{gaussian Priors
In this paper, we investigate various connections between wavelet shrinkage methods in image processing and Bayesian estimation using Generalized Gaus-sian priors. We present fundamental properties of the shrinkage rules implied by Generalized Gaussian and other heavy{tailed priors. This allows us to show a simple relationship between diierentiability of the log{ prior at zero and the sparsity ...
متن کاملA New Complexity Prior for Multiresolution Image Denoising
Application of the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle to multiresolution image denoising has been somewhat unsuccessful to date. This disappointing performance is due to the crudeness of the underlying prior image models, which lead to overly sparse solutions. We propose a new family of complexity priors based on Rissanen's universal prior for integers , which produces estimates with be...
متن کاملA Robust Image Denoising Technique in the Contourlet Transform Domain
The contourlet transform has the benefit of efficiently capturing the oriented geometrical structures of images. In this paper, by incorporating the ideas of Stein’s Unbiased Risk Estimator (SURE) approach in Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT) domain, a new image denoising technique is devised. We utilize the characteristics of NSCT coefficients in high and low subbands and apply SURE sh...
متن کاملWavelet-based image denoising using non-stationary stochastic geometrical image priors
In this paper a novel stochastic image model in the transform domain is presented and its superior performance in image denoising applications is demonstrated. The proposed model exploits local subband image statistics and is based on geometrical priors. Contrarily to complex models based on local correlations, or to mixture models, the proposed model performs a partition of the image into non-...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Image Denoising Methods Based on Wavelet Transform and Threshold Functions
There are many unavoidable noise interferences in image acquisition and transmission. To make it better for subsequent processing, the noise in the image should be removed in advance. There are many kinds of image noises, mainly including salt and pepper noise and Gaussian noise. This paper focuses on the research of the Gaussian noise removal. It introduces many wavelet threshold denoising alg...
